"Fairsted," Frederick Law Olmsted’s estate, served as both his family’s home and the world's first full-scale professional practice of landscape architecture. Recognized as the founder of American landscape architecture, Olmsted moved his family to Brookline in 1883 after supervising the design and construction of such landmarks as Central Park in New York and the US Capitol Grounds. The work of Olmsted’s Brookline office continued for nearly a century with Olmsted, his sons, and their associates designing thousands of landscape projects across the United States. Today it is managed by the National Park Service.
