The Dorchester Heights Monument, located at the center of Thomas Park in South Boston, was completed in 1902 by Boston architects Peabody and Stearns. The 115-foot-tall monument marks the night of March 4, 1776, when under order from General George Washington, Colonel John Thomas and 3,000 militia from Roxbury fortified the Heights of Dorchester, convincing British General William Howe to evacuate Boston two weeks later.

On Saturday June 4 from 11:00am to 12:00pm, to commemorate the 240th Anniversary of George Washington's First Victory and the 100th Anniversary of the National Park Service, Boston National Historical Park will dedicate a mounted cannon on the Heights of Dorchester. From noon to 6:00 pm visitors can enjoy a community open house featuring a variety of family activities.
